RPG Industry Celebrates being big enough to make Sweeping Layoffs
Members of the tabletop roleplaying game industry rejoiced this week that the RPG market has grown to a size that can allow for sizeable layoffs to appease the will of shareholders. “We were wistfully watching the downsizing of video games companies like Unity and Epic,” says Charlie Skinner, one of the recently laid off employees. “I remember everyone in the office wishing that there was enough money in RPGs to justify this kind of cruel business practice. But thankfully, when Hasbro turned their eyes on Wizards of the Coast, they noticed Dungeons & Dragons sitting in the corner behind the Magic: The Gathering team.”
Hasbro has announced over 1100 positions to be cut over the next six months, and fans were delighted to hear that a number of their favorite artists, writers, and designers would be part of this historic cutting phase by Hasbro. “It’s an incredible feeling to have all of your hard work pay off,” said Skinner. “We put in effort day after day to expand the hobby and improve the state of the games industry, and now we’re finally able to reap the rewards of a corporation that needs to look like it’s trimming the fat.” He wiped a tear from his eye. “I’m just glad I got to be a part of it.”
Skinner hopes that other RPG companies will grow to a size where they too are able to make massive layoffs just weeks before the holidays. “Companies like Magpie Games, Paizo, Kobold Press, we believe in you. It might not be this year or the next, but we’re all rooting for your owners to amass enough wealth to stop perceiving you as people and begin seeing you for the numbers on a spreadsheet you truly are.”
