Dungeon Master in Therapy clarifies he has Inner Devils, not Inner Demons
Lewis Hathaway, an interior designer and Dungeon Master, interrupted his therapist during their weekly session to correct her on her description of his inner demons. “Inner demons suggest that my struggles are chaotic, which I think we’ve spent a long time establishing is not the case. Inner devils would be a more accurate description of my problems.”
Hathaway clarified that he was incredibly appreciative of how much his therapist has been able to offer guidance. “You’ve done so much for me. Helping me realize the signs when I’m about to reach for a drink, practicing routines for controlling my temper, and even the meditation app you recommended have all been a huge improvement in my life. But just the fact that there are processes for me to deal with my problems proves even more that these are devils that can be bargained with, rather than anarchic demons that must be repelled in the Blood War.”
Hathaway’s therapist made the mistake of asking what the Blood War was, and it took a little while before she realized that Hathaway had an inordinate amount of official D&D tie-in novels in his home library, of which he was more than happy to relay the plots. When the time came for the end of their session, she attempted to bring things back to reality, suggesting that “inner demons” and “inner devils” personified Hathaway’s problems in a way that perhaps gave him too much leeway. Hathaway assured her that he was still willing to take responsibility for his actions. “No no no, inner devils make so much sense. It’s like I summoned these fiends from the Nine Hells and made a bad deal. Now, with your help, I’ve renegotiated with them. But if I break the wrong rule or stipulation, then I could free the devils from their bonds. And any consequences that could arise would fall on entirely on my shoulders, and everyone in my life could blame me. That’s obviously an incredibly healthy way to look at my problems.”
