Studies show that Major Life Changes just get in the way of a Perfectly Good Campaign
Scientists are spreading the word that major life changes such as getting married or moving across several states are in no way conducive to playing in your perfectly good campaign. Dr. Brian Letourneau, professor of Sociology at Illinois State, said, “You may be thinking that you are starting a new life with your loved one, or moving on to bigger and better things away from your hometown, but really, all you’re doing is putting a big old pause in the middle of that dungeon crawl. Think twice before making any decisions that might lose track of your character sheets.”
The studies also show that attempts to incorporate your game into life’s milestones are often not successful. “It’s a recipe for disaster,” Dr. Letourneau warned. “Our brains aren’t really hardwired to be able to multitask in that kind of way. Sure, it sounds fun to work in a little ‘how do you want to do this’ moment in your vows, or to play-by-post while you’re packing things up, but it’s really just going to detract from the experience of both. You really should just focus on finishing the adventure path you’ve been on for the past two years.”
Dr. Letourneau suggested shortening activities, to make sure you have time for what’s really important. “Do you really need to have a big wedding with your extended friends and family, or could you run to the courthouse and back in time for your Friday night game? And who doesn’t like a good staycation honeymoon? Next time you’re moving, stop every two to three hours to find a hotel with wi-fi for Discord and Foundry.” Dr. Letourneau did say that one life change would free up time for gaming, however. “It takes a bit of a time commitment up front, but once you’re through with a divorce, you’re going to find a lot of time on your hands. Well, when they have the kids, at least.”
