Pathfinder Remastered replaces the Gunslinger with all-new Radio Operator Class
Paizo made several big announcements over the weekend at GenCon, from the upcoming Starfinder 2nd Edition to the reveal that the Gunslinger would be removed from the Pathfinder Remastered releases. Director of Game Design Jason Bulmahn said in the announcement, “I was looking at this Gunslinger, and I thought about how I would feel if my child, my own precious blood and heir, were to look at this. I don’t want them to grow up thinking guns are ‘cool’ or ‘compatible with Golarion’s kitchen-sink setting.’ Our new Radio Operator will fill the niche of questionably anachronistic class.”
Paizo describes the Radio Operator as a savvy technician who uses invisible waves to send and receive information. Radio Operators can use their radio waves to triangulate enemy locations, turn up the volume on bardic performances, and produce a steady stream of non-ionizing radiation. Players will get to choose feats from one of several Professions, such as the Dispatcher, The News Anchor, and the Disc Jockey. “The Disc Jockey is one of my favorites,” says publisher Erik Mona. “They get the Shocking Jock action, which is sure to stop enemies in their tracks as they ask themselves ‘did they really say that?’ But be careful! A critical failure can lead to your own teammates disavowing you on their next podcast appearance.”
Despite the uproar from players, Bulmahn is adamant that Paizo will not come to regret this change in the coming years. “Fans have nothing to worry about,” he said. “It’s not like we’re going to come and get rid of your Guns and Gears books anytime soon. We do want to warn that the Starfinder 2e release may be delayed as we have to come up with quite a few more radio and telecommunications options to replace all of those firearms and laser weapons.”
