Spotify Wrapped completely dominated by RPG Ambient Music
Avid Spotify user Emily Miner opened her app last week to see the trends and statistics of her music-listening habits to discover that apparently she just listens to a bunch of ambient fantasy music. “This is really unfair,” she said through tears. “Just because I use Spotify to set the mood for my D&D game, I shouldn’t be left out of the fun of seeing what extremely popular musician I’m in the top 5% of listeners. I deserve to have the same moment of recognition when I see my favorite artist at the very top and say, ‘Oh yeah, that’s totally me.’”
We asked Miner if she was aware of Spotify’s private listening features that would hide the enormous amounts of Jesper Kyd and Jeremy Soule she had played in the past year. “Well, now I do, but that doesn’t solve my current problem, does it? I want to know if I listened to more Taylor Swift or Phoebe Bridgers this year. It’s hard to have a sense of perspective, because I was winding myself up for Midnights, kind of expecting to mainline it on release, but then turned out to be just sort of OK, but then I also went back to her old albums for a chaser. So even if I remember to turn on private listening every time I play D&D, I’ll never know how it all shook out in this specific year.”
She shook her head at her phone as it told her that “Silver for Monsters…” was her top song of the year. “I really don’t care if Spotify Wrapped is actually more accurate with my ambient music included. I don’t care that this Wrapped is cataloging the fun times I’ve shared with my friends in a curated fantasy experience of my own devising. What I want is a detailed itemization of my extremely personal and private listening habits that I could probably guess on my own.”
